The short version

The tests

The microphone and camera tests ask your browser for permission first. Sound and video are analysed in your browser: to draw the level meter, measure background noise and clarity, check the picture's brightness, resolution and frame rate, and decide whether a device works. When a device works, its name (like “Blue Yeti”) is kept in the page's memory to fill in the fix steps. We don't receive, store, watch or listen to any of it.

Analytics

We use Google Tag Manager to load Google Analytics, which tells us how many people visit, which tests they use, which pages they came from, and roughly where they are and what device they use. It uses cookies to tell visits apart. We use this only to improve the site, and Google processes it as described in how Google uses information from sites that use its services. We don't send the results of the tests to analytics.

If you're in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, analytics cookies are off until you agree to them. Until then, Google receives no analytics cookies from this site.

Ads and cookies

We use Google AdSense to show ads. Google and its partners use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can turn off personalised ads in Google's ad settings, and learn more in how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent, in a message from Google, before personalised ads are shown, and can change their choice at any time.

Server logs

Our hosting provider, Vercel Inc. (United States), keeps standard request logs, such as IP address, browser type and the page requested, to keep the site running and secure. They're kept for 1 day. The host may keep some data longer to protect its network, as its own privacy policy explains.

Legal basis

If you're in the EU or UK: we keep server logs because we have a legitimate interest in running a secure site. Analytics cookies and personalised ads are only used with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. The tests themselves don't send us personal data.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to how it's used. The tests don't send us your data, so we hold none to delete. For analytics and ads data, use Google's settings linked above. In the EU or UK you can also complain to your data protection authority.
